Where: Jackson Square

On any given day, Jackson Square is full of life. Artists, musicians, dancers and fortune tellers mingle with the many visitors and residents who stroll through the area.

But one night a year, Jackson Square turns into a truly moving scene. A few day before Christmas, residents and visitors of New Orleans alike join together to sing carols by candle light, lifting their voices high into the night.

Sponsored by Patio Planters of the Vieux Carre, Caroling in Jackson Square attracts hundreds of people who gather in the square after dark, with the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral looming in the background. Candles are passed around to all who come, and a soft glow slowly emerges as people use the flame of their candle to light those of their neighbors standing around them.

Song sheets are provided (as well as the candles) and soon everyone is singing Christmas carols in unison. The effect is moving, and Caroling on Jackson Square is sure to become a favorite holiday event for those attending for the first time. And remember, this is a family friendly event, so be sure to include the little ones in the fun!

The winners of the Patio Planters contest for the best Christmas decorations in the French Quarter will also be announced and awarded at this event.

The gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the caroling beings promptly at 7 p.m. The temperature can vary this time of year in New Orleans, so make sure to check the weather and bundle up if appropriate.
