Monday, June 1 and Tuesday, June 2. Learn the dances of the orixas from the Candomble tradition of Bahia Brazil. Vania Amaral, native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, member of Ilê Axé Kale Bokun, is an authority (egbomi) on the teachings, dances, songs, rhythms, and mythology of the Afro-Brazilian Candomble. She shares her extensive knowledge of Candomblé based upon her experience as a devotee, a dance and music instructor, and as a performer. She studied Afro-Brazilian folkloric dance with Mestre King, a pioneering dancer/educator. Vania has had an extensive career as a dancer and singer with the premier folkloric companies in Bahia and continues to perform in the U.S. and Europe. Vania was a primary consultant for the internationally acclaimed DVD series, ORIXAS. She has performed with Ballet Folclorico do Brasil and San Francisco-based ensembles, Aguas da Bahia and Quimbanda. The Los Angeles Times described her voice as…”trance inducing.”
