Event Details

“Black girls face high and disproportionate suspension rates across the country – and it’s NOT b/c they are misbehaving more frequently.”

PLEASE JOIN Geaux Girl! Magazine and Legacy Leadership Academy for Girls for a screening of the documentary recently premiered at the Congressional Black Caucus, based on the critically acclaimed book by the Center on Poverty and Inequality’s long-time partner, Dr. Monique W. Morris. The screening will be followed by a conversation with experts in the field from across the city of New Orleans. We want to understand from local girls what they believe are solutions to the issues highlighted in the documentary.

“PUSHOUT” looks at the criminalization and miseducation of Black girls that has led to their alarming high school dropout rate and increase into the juvenile justice system and examines what it will take to make certain these vulnerable youth are not dismissed as throwaway kids.

The documentary takes a deep dive into the systemic cultural beliefs, politics and practices that criminalize and dehumanize Black girls in America and couples that with thoughtful analysis that points the way to the work being done to assure a far more just and equitable future for these girls.
